North Central West Region
The wide variety of natural scenery here appeals to travelers and makes for a range of things to see and do. Minnesota is a crossroads for three distinct environments—the Western plains and prairies, the Northern coniferous forest and the Eastern hardwood forest. These three lands meet in the Northwest third of the state, where deep pine forests and wilderness lakes gradually give way to a tapestry of rich farmland to the West and rolling woods of aspen, birch and maple in the vacation lakes area to the South. But the real focus is its lakes, noted for their fine fishing.
Alexandria Lakes Area -- The Alexandria Lakes area is one of the prime resort spots in the state. Dozens of lakes offer great fishing for walleye, bass, northern pike and panfish. Vacationers also enjoy boating, sailing, waterskiing and windsurfing these waters.
Bemidji Lakes Area -- The concentration of lakes here–Cass, Bemidji, the giant Red Lakes and dozens of others in between these big waters–have long drawn serious anglers. Walleye, northern pike, bass and perch are the lure.
Brainerd Lakes Area -- The heart of Minnesota is lake country. The Brainerd Lakes Area, around the communities of Brainerd, Baxter, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, Crosslake and Pine River, is splashed with more than 460 lakes. To the east is 18-mile-wide Lake Mille Lacs, the second largest within Minnesota. And the Mississippi River winds through the area as a quiet, woodland stream.
Lake of the Woods -- Straddling the Canadian border are the expansive waters of Lake of the Woods, with 65,000 miles of shoreline, 14,000 islands and a 55-mile width. These waters boast some of the finest walleye and northern pike fishing in the state. In fact, this area is popular for a variety of outdoor activities: boating, camping, hunting and wildlife watching.
Red River Valley -- On the Eastern edge of the Great Plains, the Red River Valley was once swathed in tall prairie grass as far as the eye could see and traversed by great herds of buffalo. Today, this rich agricultural region boasts a range of outdoor recreation plus two lively cities on the plains.
